HISTORY: The Advanced Studies Program is offered by Project Contemporary Competitiveness and through the partnership with Bridgewater State College. ASP 2004 will be the 36th consecutive year at Bridgewater State College...and with more than 15,000 alumni.
MISSION STATEMENT: To provide an intellectually enriching and socially stimulating affordable six week residential summer program at the campus of Bridgewater State College in a friendly, supportive, learning environment with a carefully constructed balance of freedoms and responsibilities for mature ninth and tenth grade high-ability students who are open to the excitement of learning and ready for a challenge.
STUDENTS: Gifted and talented ninth and tenth grade students, representing 20 southeastern Massachusetts member districts: Abington, Avon, Berkley, Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District, Bristol-Plymouth Regional School District, Carver, Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School District, East Bridgewater, Freetown-Lakeville Regional School District, Dosnold, Harwich, Mashpee, Middleboro, Old Rochester Regional School District, Rockland, South Shore Vocational Technical School District, Tauton, Wareham, West Bridgewater, and Whitman-Hanson Regional School District. ASP 2002 also included seven students from Grenoble, France.
STAFF: Instructional Staff of 36 from the ranks of college professors, public and private school teachers. College students and teachers serving as interns in the classroooms. Residential Staff of one Resident Director, a male and two female Resident Administrators, ten Floor Leaders, and forty Proctors.
ENROLLMENT: In 2003, we graduated 512 students.
PROGRAM: Each student selects two one hour and forty minute classes from the following subjects: Creative Writing; Rocketry; Human Physiology; Microbiology; Marine Biology; Painting; Drawing; Photography; Psychology; Archaeology; Advanced Reading; Real Robots; Journalism and Publishing; Sculpture; Catastrophes, Disasters, and the Fate of the Red Sox; American Sign Language; Aviation; Music and Movement; Person to Person; Adolescents and the Law; PCC Web Site; Critic's Corner; Improve with Improv; Theatre One; Television Production; Symphonic Band; and Computer Music.
» Formal Supervised study hour Monday - Thursday.
» Two and one half hours of organized recreational activities each day.
» Required attendance at large group instruction programs three evenings
per week with an emphasis on current adolescent issues
» Formal productions by the Music and Movement, Improve with Improv,
and Theatre One classes and exhibits by the Painting, Drawing, Sculpture,
and Photography classes the final week of the program
» Awards and certificates presented at the culminating activity the final day of the program.
TUITION: Tuition for ASP 2004: $1,430. Application fee: $20. Lab fees in designated classes. N.B Scholarships are not available through PCC. Individual school districs may provide some assistance.
